Rand Miller is the CEO and co-founder of Cyan Worlds, and he and his brother Robin were responsible for creating the blockbuster hit game Myst, which became the top-selling computer game from its release in 1993 until the early 2000s, when it was finally surpassed by The Sims.
Building Worlds Before It Was Cool
Rand and Robin Miller didn’t set out to revolutionize gaming. They started by creating interactive children’s books — The Manhole (1988) was one of the first CD-ROM games ever made. But their ambitions grew, and in 1993 they released Myst: a first-person exploration game set on a mysterious island filled with puzzles, books, and portals to other worlds called Ages.
The game was a sensation. It sold millions of copies and introduced an entire generation to the idea that games could be contemplative, atmospheric, and beautiful — not just fast and loud. Miller also voice-acted the iconic protagonist Atrus in the Myst series, and co-authored the Myst novels.
A Legacy of Exploration
Miller continued building worlds with Riven (1997), the critically acclaimed sequel, and Obduction (2016), the spiritual successor to Myst. Cyan Worlds also released Firmament (2023), continuing their tradition of immersive, puzzle-driven exploration games.

Miller lives in the green state of Washington with his wife and daughters. When not at work, he enjoys photography, guitar, and computer tinkering.
