Scott Cawthon, the man behind the animatronics and the creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s, helped pave the way for indie developers within the realm of gaming.
Before the Animatronics
An Art Institute of Houston graduate, Cawthon developed approximately 80 games and animated over 30 shows before Five Nights at Freddy’s launched. Many of his early works were Christian-themed — in 2005, he participated in Hope Animation, dedicated to showcasing Christian animator work globally while presenting Jesus Christ’s teachings through creative mediums.

As a devout Christian, Cawthon’s beliefs influenced his development journey in unexpected ways. After critics said his characters in faith-based games looked like “creepy animatronics,” he turned that criticism into inspiration — and Five Nights at Freddy’s was born.
A Franchise That Changed Indie Gaming
Upon FNAF’s August 2014 release, Cawthon became an overnight sensation. He created numerous sequels and prequels, building deep and intricate lore that spawned one of gaming’s most dedicated fan communities. The franchise grew to 28 games, partnered with Blumhouse Productions for a feature film that grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, and proved that a solo developer with faith and determination could build something massive.

Despite retiring from active development in 2019, Cawthon’s legacy continues to inspire indie developers everywhere. His journey — from Christian animation to gaming’s biggest indie franchise — is a reminder that God works through creativity in unexpected ways.
